A Painted Lady

An Exclusive Kit
by Needle In A Haystack

A Painted Lady

This fun little house was inspired by the Painted Ladies of Alamo Square in San Francisco. Here in Alameda we too have a wealth of stately Victorians, many just a few blocks from the shop. Alameda was where the well to-do built their summer homes in the late 1890's to early 1900's. Why Alameda? Because we're at the south end of the fog belt so we get fog in the summer but not as much as San Francisco does. Naturally cooling vs. completely chilled!

Jeannette Douglas designed this little beauty for us originally as part of a set of 5 houses given out as a thank-you gift for our February 2013 class with Jeannette. We thought stitching up a single house and being able to change the house color was a great idea - so A Painted Lady kit was born.

A Painted Lady Kit ContentsThe fabric is 28 count Milan linen, hand-dyed a gor
geous blue for us by Lakeside Linens. Stitched with Anchor floss - we found Anchor had the best range of the 4 shades needed for the house. If you wanted to make your Painted Lady especially colourful you could play with the colors and do the trim in a completely different color, vs. a shade of the main house color.

Our model was finished into a pincushion using some pretty purple fabric and stuffed with lambswool, which is great for needles and pins. Should you be inclined toward an emery pincushion we also have emery available.

Finishing suggestion for the pincushion: fuse a lightweight interfacing to the wrong side of both the linen and the backing fabric. This gives it a bit more stability when you're stitching it together, either by hand or by machine. If you fill your pincushion with something like sand, walnut shells or other fine grained stuffing we suggest you create a pouch for it with a densely woven fabric so it won't escape. Fusible interfacing works great for making quick little pockets for those types of stuffings.

Each A Painted Lady Kit includes chart, hand-dyed Lakeside Linens 28 count linen, needle & Anchor Embroidery floss. Pick the color of your house - our model house was stitched in Lavender.
