Foggy Greetings!
Summer is in full swing, which means fog in
Alameda. We're at the edge of what I call the "fog belt" so for much of the
summer we have fog for at least part of the day. This week it's been more like
half the day, with the fog not lifting until mid-afternoon. It's lousy tomato
growing weather but personally I prefer it to the temperature that can be
reached just 10 miles away. Some days Debi can come in from Concord where it's
95° and at the shop it's more like 65°. It does make dressing in layers
a requirement, even more so than during the winter. In just the past hour the
temperature has dropped more than 10° because of the fog. All part of the
fun with micro-climates in the SF Bay Area. |
July 25th - Thread A Needle
Day!
Don't forget to join us this Saturday for
Thread a Needle Day. The Bay Area EGA Chapter will be joining us
at the shop during the afternoon, stitching and showing people how to thread a
needle. Stop by and join us for some treats during the day and make a little
celebration of it. Or perhaps you have planned your own celebration of Thread a
Needle Day! |

You can usually find most new charts
through the Hoffman Merchant
Mall and you can place orders for anything in the Hoffman on-line catalog.
You're also welcome to check out our other 2 main distributors,
Norden Crafts and
Wichelt Imports to see what's new or what
other fun things are available we've not mentioned.
Be sure to also check out the video from
Frank Bielec on the Hoffman website
for a little stitching fun. Pass the link along to your non-stitching friends
to show them what fun it can be!
We finally
have more of the Sheep Scissors holders from Lantern Moon, which have
just flown out the door with each shipment. This time we got 36 of them so
we're hoping that will hold us for bit. Each one is hand-made in Vietnam and
they are so cute you want to hug them. They make great gifts for yourself or a
stitching friend (or even just someone who collects scissors). Start your
holiday gift shopping early!

Needleprint - Mary
Wigham
Part 8 of Mary Wigham was posted
today so only 1 more part to go. If you're not familiar with Mary Wigham, let
me introduce you to her. Jacqueline of Needleprint has the rights to
reproduce this sampler from the Ackworth School that owns the
original and the chart for Mary Wigham is available for free off the
Needleprint blog. It is
requested that you make a donation to the musuem, which helps them in the
continued efforts to conserve samplers in their collection.
I have finally chosen my colors. I'm doing
Mary on 40 count Lakeside Linens Vintage Green Slate. I have two hanks of Ltd.
Ed. Gloriana silk from when Anne still worked at the shop that are pale to
light greens and one has a bit of blue, lavender and pale rose in it. When I
get a little more of it done I'll take a photo of it. |

In between stitching this past week I've
been reading the amazingly funny Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Many
of us at the shop are big Jane Austen fans and who knew you could spice up
P&P with zombies and the warrior Bennet girls. This isn't for the Austen
purist but most of the dialog remains intact and it's a really fun read (and
the zombies do explain a lot :-)).
Well back to work on Mary Wigham. I have a
Torchwood episode to watch tonight so while aliens are threatening the world
I'll try to get some stitching done! I wonder if that affects my tension at
all...
