Needle In A
Haystack News

Tax Day Greetings,

If you're one of our US stitchers you've just had the joy of Tax Day. I always say I'm going to get the paperwork done for my accountant by mid-February but I'm lucky if I get it done by his deadline of March 15th. I just made that date this year so it's done and electronically filed - one less thing on the to-do list. A to-do list that never seems to get any smaller by the way!

Maker FaireLast year some of us participated in doing stitching demos and teaching at Maker Faire in San Mateo. If you're not familiar with Maker Faire it's where craft meets high tech - at least that's how I describe it. You'll find booths with interesting things made from recycled materials, the folks who build R2D2 robots, paper makers, repair workshops for your electronic devices, a huge range of things built with Legos and a whole host of other interesting things to do and see. TNNA, our trade organization is once again participating by having a booth for those of us who love needlework to share that joy. At the 2009 event we taught folks to stitch who ranged in age from about 4 to in their 80's. This is a fun family event so you get all ages dropping by to see what we're doing.

We are looking for volunteers to come teach people to needlepoint, cross-stitch and embroider. You don't need any previous teaching experience, just a desire to show people how to stitch. Our shop volunteers from last year all had a great time and in a couple of cases, discovered they really liked to show young people in particular how to stitch. There are no "classes" - this is very informal and more like a drop-in clinic and demo. At one point last year I had 8 or 10 people I was teaching at the same time - so I'm hoping I can find more volunteers to help out this year. With my busy schedule I was somewhat reluctant to spending a day there but man, was I blown away at how much fun it was. I was pooped at the end of the day, but seeing young and not so young enjoy learning a new hobby was really energizing for me. And seeing the volunteers have so much fun was a kick as well.

If you're part of a guild and the guild would like to participate in some way let me know and I'll pass your info off to the person who's doing the overall volunteer organizing. If you're more of a knit or crochet buff, they're looking for volunteers as well so I can pass your name along.

The show is open 10-8 on Saturday and 10-6 on Sunday. Generally we like to have people come for about a 4 hour time slot and then you can have fun exploring the event. It's at the San Mateo Event Center (at 92 & 101), spread out between all the center's buildings. The show is May 22 & 23rd (a week before Memorial Day so it's not over the 3-day weekend).

If you're interested in volunteering just let me know and I'll put your name on the list. We're still working out schedules for the event but I figured I start asking now so you can plan ahead of time if you'd like to join us there.

You can check out Maker Faire on their website. For 2010 they are also adding events in Detroit, MI and NY, NY - so if you have stitching friends there they too can participate in what is an amazingly fun event!

The Online Needlework Show
This weekend is the Online Needlework Show, where a number of designers show off their wares in a virtual show for shops. The show is open for general viewing until midnight on Sunday. I don't order from all the vendors who participate but I do try to pick 2 or 3 that I've not necessarily ordered from before. I was intrigued by the pendants from Carousel Charts since I'm on my tiny stitching kick. Nouveau Encore Designs has some beautiful alphabet samplers - I picked up a couple at a store last year when I was traveling so I think I'll buy some for the shop. Scarlet Quince has the most amazing rabbit "Young Hare" as well as a fabulous tapestry design. And while they're not inexpensive I think I might have to pick up some of the Thimble Berrie Jewele & Straw Berrie Jewele kits from Scholehouse for the Needle. If you find anything in particular you want from these designers, let me know on Monday as I'll be doing orders with them on Tuesday or Wednesday. If you find any other items you're interested in let me know and I'll see if it's a vendor I'll be ordering from either during the show or in the next few weeks.

JBW French County BunnyI posted photos of all my finished Society of Soie Surfine pieces on the Society of Soie Surfine blog. If you don't want to stitch pieces as small as these or don't subscribe to the Society all of the colors in Series #1 will be released in Gloriana's new Florimell line over the next couple of months. Carmine Rose and Olivine are out now in Florimell. So if you love the Society colors but the thought of 40 count over one leaves you breathless, never fear - those lovely colors will be available in Florimell soon. As they are released I'll put a note in this newsletter or on the blog.

Now back to stitching on the back of my Zecca bird bag!

Happy Stitching,
