Needle In A Haystack News

May Day Greetings,

If you celebrate May Day, I hope your weather is fabulous. We're expecting a sunny weekend in the mid 70's. We had rain again this week, which helps a lot in not making this a drought year!

Maker
FaireI'm in charge of donated materials for the needlepoint, cross-stitch & embroidery aspects of Maker Faire in San Mateo next month. We have some supplies left over from last year and I've gotten a donation of some printed canvases from Alice Peterson Co. We need to make up needlepoint kits with the canvases and threads we've got, so if you're a local customer and want to help out in this way, let me know. I need some volunteers to come to the shop to sort thread and then pair it up with a small canvas, needle, instructions and bag it. Any time the shop is open we're happy to have you come help with this.  If you have any old small kits you'd like to donate to the cause, just bring them with you. We try to keep it on the small side so it's not overwhelming for a new stitcher to contemplate working on :-).

If you are interested in being a volunteer to teach people to needlepoint, cross-stitch and embroidery at the event, there is now a Volunteer sign-up page our event coordinator has created. You don't need any previous teaching experience, just a desire to show people how to stitch. If you're part of a guild and the guild would like to participate in some way you can have your guild members sign-up using the same page. If you're more of a knit or crochet buff, they're looking for volunteers as well so feel free to pass along the Volunteer sign-up page link.

The show is open 10-8 on Saturday and 10-6 on Sunday and the volunteer time blocks are listed in the Volunteer sign-up page. The show is May 22 & 23rd (a week before Memorial Day so it's not over the 3-day weekend).

You can check out Maker Faire on their website. For 2010 they are also adding events in Detroit, MI and NY, NY - so if you have stitching friends there they too can participate in what is an amazingly fun event!

Picework May/June issueMary Frances has a beautiful knitted lace bag featured on the cover of the newest issue of Piecework, which we received on Monday. It's also featured on the back cover in an ad for Finca threads since she knitted it with one of their threads (we carry many of them). If you'd like to see the bag on the cover, or one she knitted with a larger thread, come by the shop. It's in the oak cabinet by the check-out area.

If you're a lace knitter or know someone who is, many of the local SF Bay Area lace knitters meet at the shop the 3rd Sunday of the month from 1-3pm. You're welcome to come visit with them, even if you don't do lace knitting yourself!

You can order the May/June 2010 issue of Piecework through our online magazine catalog.

FacebookIf you are Facebook member, I have finally finished putting together a Facebook page for the shop. More and more designers and shops in the needlework world are participating on social media forums like this and I figured it was about time we did as well. Check out the Needle In A Haystack Facebook page and become a fan (OK, so I know the new terminology is that you "like" a page but it starts to sound more like a Sally Field speech). We'll be posting information to Facebook as well as our regular blog so you can keep up in whatever way suites you.

I did order some new items from the Online Needlework a couple of weeks ago. I'm waiting for delivery of the some pendants from Carousel Charts as well as kits from Scholehouse for the Needle.  Charts from Nouveau Encore Designs (beautiful alphabet samplers), Blackberry Lane and Scarlet Quince have arrived. I love the Young Hare and Lady with Unicorn - Sense of Smell designs. Stop by the shop this weekend and take a look at them. It will be next week before I have time to do anything about putting them online.

Cricket CollectionAlso just arrived is are 4 new titles from The Cricket Collection. You can visit her website to see all the details about them. They are Picture Perfect, Peas & Qs, Celebrate America and Summer. If you're a fan of Vicky's work, as we are, you'll enjoy these new designs.

With my last Alice Peterson Co. order I got some of the eBook Stitch 'n Zips that are blank canvas. So if you want to create your own design for your Kindle, Nook or Sony Reader, these are a great way to do it. They are $31/ea and the fabric on the back is either Black, Green and Blue. Just give us a call or stop by the shop if you're interested in them.

Zecca BagI've made good progress on stitching the back of my Zecca bird bag. It looks a bit like a Hawaiian quilt so I'm working a square at a time - OK, not exactly one at a time but close. I've finished the lower right square and have all but a couple of the Rhodes stitches to do in the right middle square. The upper right square is about half done but I got intrigued by the tree in the lower middle section so had to work on it.  You can visit my blog to see more photos of the bag.

As an happy iPhone owner I have purchased a couple of apps for my iPhone that help me with my stitching. Suzy's Portable Stitches and Ruth Schmuff's iStitches Vol 1 (from her Stitches CD set). Both are great references to have on-the-go. And while I own both in their printed form, sometimes it's just faster and easier for me to look them up on my iPhone, especially when traveling or in a class.

Happy Stitching,
